Name: Smokestep
Rank: Warrior
Clan: TangleClan
Gender: Tom
Age: 2 years and one moon (25 moons)
Picture (Optional): ((I had one, but I sort of lost the link. I’ll edit this when I find it again.))
Physical Description: Smokestep is a handsome, well-muscled tom, with a lean but sturdy build that is perfect for stealth. He has a long, graceful tail that lends him balance, and adds to his agility. His claws are exceptionally sharp, allowing him a great tree-climbing ability, which is useful to him in tight situations.
His pelt, which is medium in length, consists of two main colors. The first is a dark, shadowy ebony. Occasionally, several white strands of fur can be seen mingled with this color, giving it an almost smoky appearance. This color can be seen on his lower back, hindquarters, back legs and face.
The upper part of his face displays this color prominently, as it engulfs his ears and the area around his eyes. His chin, and the topmost part of his neck, also show this color, which spreads up to engulf part of his muzzle, and the tip of his nose.
The second color is a very pale shade of off-white, which is remarkably similar to the color of snow. His upper back, neck, chest, underbelly, forelegs, paws and parts of his tail and face all flaunt this color. On his tail, it can be seen in several small areas, which break the solid black around them.
On his face, a white bar separates two areas of black, stretching completely across his features. The top part of his muzzle, and the bridge of his nose both display this color. Though it would not appear so, this interesting combination of colors can give him excellent camouflage.
Personality: Smokestep is a very confident tom, who is surprisingly concerned with his Clan mates’ well-being. He cares for others’ feelings, though he doesn’t always let it show in the most obvious of ways. He is fairly headstrong about his opinions, and has a hard time admitting when he is wrong.
He will, however, respect the decisions made by his leader, as he holds the greatest admiration for cats who have much authority in TangleClan. He is somewhat hesitant when letting another cat get close to him, and can occasionally appear to be somewhat shy. His trust can be difficult to gain, though it is easier for him to accept a cat that he senses has a good heart.
He has the utmost loyalty to those that he trusts, and to those that are closest to him. While he exhibits great respect for the other three Clans of the forest, he generally puts on a tough façade for those who do not know him well. This can make him seem a bit arrogant, even self-absorbed, but these are not traits that he actually shows when surrounded by his Clan.
He is extremely loyal to TangleClan, and strives to follow the warrior code as best he can. He is a fierce opponent in battle, especially when it concerns the protection of his Clan. He is also a great hunter, aided by his stealth skills. He harbors a great sadness in his heart, from an event that occurred in his past, though he hardly ever lets it show in front of others.
History: Smokestep was born outside of Clan territory, in the Rogue and Loner Lands. His mother, a sleek, black loner with the name Flutter, had made her home in an abandoned twoleg nest that lay close to TangleClan territory. His father was a gray tabby TangleClanner called Coldfrost, a loyal warrior of TangleClan, who had once caught Flutter crossing the border into TangleClan territory. He had taken the loner back to camp as a prisoner, believing that she was stealing prey.
For one full day, the Clan leader, deputy, and high-ranking warriors debated what to do with their prisoner. They sent several scouting parties to look for remains of prey in the area where Coldfrost had taken Flutter prisoner. Finally, shortly after the patrols returned, they announced that the loner would be set free, as they had found no evidence that she had been stealing prey. Flutter left the Clan behind, and headed back to her own territory.
Meanwhile, Coldfrost had become smitten with the loner she-cat, and followed her back to the twoleg nest. There, he spoke to Flutter, and confessed his feelings for her. The she-cat informed him that she returned his affection, and the two cats became mates.
Knowing that the rest of TangleClan would be furious if they were ever to discover this budding relationship, Coldfrost kept it a secret from his Clan, visiting Flutter under the guise of going on a hunting patrol. Many nights, he returned to camp only after giving himself a thorough wash, to hide the loner’s scent that still lingered on his pelt.
On one of his visits, Flutter told Coldfrost that she was expecting kits. The two cats rejoiced at this news, but knew it would only become more difficult to hide their relationship from Coldfrost’s Clan. The warrior insisted on going to see his mate more often, as he worried for her safety during her kitting.
Several moons later, Flutter gave birth to a single kit, a black and white tom she named Smoke. Coldfrost was not present at the kitting, but Flutter was confident in her ability to protect her young kit. However, she did not anticipate the fact that a band of merciless rogues had gathered nearby, intent on driving the young queen away from her territory. When they invaded the nest, Flutter fought fiercely to defend Smoke, but she was still exhausted from her kitting. The rogues outnumbered her severely, and quickly killed the loner. Leaving the twoleg nest, they overlooked the tiny kit, and Smoke survived.
Luckily for the small tom, Coldfrost arrived on the scene soon after the rogues departed. The TangleClan tom discovered his son, shivering from the cold, near Flutter’s body. Although he grieved deeply for the loss of his mate, Coldfrost knew that he must take their kit where it would be safe; he began the journey back to the TangleClan camp, carrying with him his newborn son.
When he arrived back at the camp, Coldfrost’s Clan mates were suspicious of the kit he brought with him. They wanted to know where he had come from; was he Coldfrost’s kin? The warrior was forced to tell the story of his and Flutter’s forbidden affair, and awaited judgment from his leader. The TangleClan leader was just and fair, and ruled that the kit would stay in the Clan, with the new name Smokekit. His care was entrusted to a queen named Scarletfang, who had recently kitted and was raising a litter of her own.
With the love and care of Scarletfang, Smokekit quickly grew into a healthy and energetic kit. He had no recollection of his birth mother, only of Scarletfang and her litter, his foster siblings. They could almost constantly be seen tumbling around the camp on unsteady legs, curious about everything they encountered.
When he was six moons old, Smokekit was ready to become an apprentice. In the sight of StarClan, the TangleClan leader gave him the new name Smokepaw, and he officially began his warrior training, mentored by a tom named Swiftheart. The apprentice showed much enthusiasm, and was always ready to learn. He proved himself to be a great hunter, and his skills in battle were recognized even by the Clan leader. Swiftheart was very proud of his apprentice, and praised him often.
Two moons later, Smokepaw was visiting Scarletfang in the nursery, when she decided it was time for him to know the truth about his heritage. She told him the story of Coldfrost and Flutter’s love for each other, and how his mother had died protecting him. Smokepaw was shocked by this new revelation, as everything seemed to fall into place about his past; why the members of the Clan used to treat him with such suspicion, why his father was not the same cat as the father of Scarletfang’s litter. He thanked Scarletfang, and decided then that he would become a warrior the Clan could respect, no matter his heritage.
Another two moons passed, and Smokepaw’s training continued. The tasks he was given became more intense, but he vowed to never give up. Finally, Swiftheart recommended to the Clan leader that he become a warrior, and the ceremony was scheduled for that very night. With his Clan mates gathered around him, Smokepaw promised to uphold the warrior code, and was given the name Smokestep, in honor of his stealth and camouflage.
Smokestep continued to serve his Clan faithfully, fighting in many battles, against both Clan cats and rogues alike. In one such battle, he met a beautiful, tortoiseshell rogue named Pyrite. She was taken prisoner in the battle, and remained in TangleClan after her rogue companions had fled. Eventually, Smokestep discovered that he was developing feelings for the she-cat. He argued fiercely with himself, reminded of the tale about his mother’s death that he’d heard so long ago. But then, another part of him wondered, surely the outcome would be different?
Finally, not knowing what else to do, he confessed his love to Pyrite. At first, the young she-cat was wary of his proclamation, and avoided answering it. But as time went on, she too began to feel a strong connection to the tom, and told him of this. Smokestep implored her to stay with him in TangleClan, and after several days, she accepted his offer. They told the Clan leader of this, and Pyrite was made a full member of the Clan. However, the she-cat refused to have her name changed, insisting that it was the name her mother had given her moons ago. Shortly after her acceptance into the Clan, Pyrite and Smokestep became mates, and were told by the medicine cat that Pyrite was expecting kits.
Two moons later, Pyrite gave birth to a beautiful ebony-colored she-cat, the only kit in her litter, who was named Duskkit in honor of her black pelt. Smokestep rejoiced at this, and the small family seemed perfectly happy. However, Pyrite was not truly as comfortable in the Clan as she said; the thought of raising a kit in TangleClan became very daunting to her, as she felt as if she did not truly belong in Clan life. She told Smokestep of these feelings, hoping that he would understand. The tom pleaded with her to remain in the Clan, but she refused. Leaving the care of her kit to another of the nursing queens, Pyrite left on a journey to some distant land, never to be seen again.
Smokestep was saddened greatly by his loss, and turned to the one family member he had left in TangleClan: Duskkit. He watched with pleasure as the she-kit grew, making sure to visit her daily in the nursery.
One moon later, when Duskkit was two moons old, disaster struck. A FireClan raid was mounted against TangleClan, and the TangleClanners were caught unprepared when the larger Clan attacked. In the chaos that ensued, Duskkit was somehow stolen from the nursery, and taken back to the FireClanClan camp by the Clan’s warriors.
Smokestep was gravely injured in the battle, so he was unaware of his daughter’s fate until the next day, when the medicine cat told him the terrible news. The tom felt as if he could no longer go on living, but his Clan mates told him otherwise. They supported him through his loss, and eventually, his heart began to heal.
Many moons passed, and Smokestep waited for any news of his lost daughter. On the night of the full moon, six moons after the FireClan raid, he attended a Gathering. To his surprise, among the ranks of FireClan that night was Duskkit, now apprenticed with the name Duskpaw. The father and daughter rejoiced at their reunion, and Smokestep begged his daughter to return home. But, after a brief hesitation, Duskpaw told him sadly that she could not; she had become a loyal cat of FireClan, and did not wish to leave. Smokestep sadly accepted this news, though he grieved at the end of the night, when Duskpaw disappeared along with the rest of the FireClan cats.
Over time, Smokestep began to start afresh, still keeping in touch with Duskpaw at every Gathering they attended. His feelings for Pyrite and his daughter never wavered, but he settled back into life in TangleClan, remaining a very loyal warrior. Eventually, he learned that Duskpaw was now a warrior, named Dusklight. Although he missed his daughter, he stayed in TangleClan, and became the confident, loyal warrior he is today.
