The tortoiseshell deputy relaxed her sleek muscles, letting the current take her farther down the river. The crystal ribbon of water was very chilly, sending a small shiver along her pretty pelt. She loved to swim: just the feeling of the free water splashing about soothed her. But she knew better, so she kept her guard up.
The gusty stones were now in site. 'A good place to rest,' she thought. 'Then I'll go back and organize the night patrols.' Using her pack paws, she skidded around the river floor, stones frequently snagging into her pads. With a strong start, she leaped to one of the smaller stones that overhanged the river.
'Somethings coming...' her ears perked in instinctive alert. "Come out!" she demanded. "Show yourself!"

Shiningstream heard the noise getting closer. "Come out!" she demanded yet again. "I'm not a fool!" It was true. Shiningstream was very clever and very bright. She was always listening, always waiting, always wondering. Her aloof way of thinking was sometimes feared, yet very respected. "I'll give you one more chance!"
