Poisonpaw padded into the camp, carrying some wilted plants. She was furious. She stormed into her mentor's den and hissed, "Look at this! These are the only herbs that I could find! How are these supposed to cure cats?" She was normally a calm and quiet cat, but ever since they had moved to the city that good mood had been getting fouler by the day. She remembered the day that they were chased out very clearly. They had been sitting vigil for Spottedstorm when they were attacked by the cats. There were so many of them that they had had no choice but to flee. Their clan was lucky enough not to loose any cats, but they had lost their home. After they had left clan territory they had found the other clans, who said that they had been overwhelmed with the invaders too. They had traveled here together, pursued by the other cats. Poisonpaw wished that the clans could have stayed together. It was so much easier to find herbs and tend to the cats with more medicine cats to help.
(((Is that Okay, because we really didn't get to post with the other cats.)))

The deputy-queen was huddled underneath a cement overhang where the nursery had been established: a small indent inside the stoney walls where the cleanest water was filtered through. Despite that, it wasn't going so good for Shiningstream and her kits, four of them, even including Rainkit who she had taken up as a foster daughter. They all mewled pitifully, crying at the stench and the lack of milk Shiningstream was unable to produce. Day after day she ordered hunting patrols to scavenge the city for anything to eat, even Twoleg food she could choke down for her kits. "Poisonpaw?" she called regretfully, "Do you have anything to help with my milk?"

Earthheart glanced at the herbs her apprentice had brought in. She hadn't been able to gather any from her den when they were driven out, so now they had make do. Starclan, send me a sign. We need you, a place to converse with you. All we eat here is garbage... "Calm down, Poisonpaw. All we can do is try. Starclan help us."
"Why do you always sound so calm? Even when we cannot talk to Starclan, you act as if Starclan are with us..." growled Willowmoon, padding up to her sister. "Why? Where are they?"
"I cannot tell you that, sister. All I know is that I feel them with me, jut as I feel them with the clan. But you are right, we need another Moonstone." Earthheart rubbed against Willowmoon's shoulder.

Icewhisker's ears twitched. She had overheard everyword the others had said. The stench of twoleg garbage filled her nose. How could any cat sleep here?! Icewhisker thought. Even in the worst of times in the mountians her family always found a way. Could this clan do that here, at this time, with this many cats?

Rainkit squirmed against her mother uncomfortably and nuzzled into her fur. The small kit was drenched and shivering. Rainkit began to cough violently and she mewled in pain as her throat stung from the putrid fumes.

Shiningstream quickly redirected her attention from Poisonpaw to her foster daughter, her eyes wide with distress and concern. Rainkit seemed to be the weakest of her kits, and needed as much warmth as she could get. Picking up a raggedy wool blanket her warriors had discovered in a Twoleg window, she quickly bunched it up under their tiny bodies and nuzzled them fiercly to keep the blood flowing. "Be strong, my dears. I and the Clan will make sure you surivive."

Rainkit looked up into the caring eyes of her mother with love. She was too young to remember her birth mother but Shiningstream was just as much the mother she had hoped any cat to be. Rainkit mewed at her mother and snuggled up against her warm fur.
Sharkfang came over and took a quick look at the kits before laying beside his mate. He nuzzled her fur and gave her a passionate lick to the forehead. "How are you holding up?" he inquired.

Poisonpaw padded in to the nursery to check on the kits. She noticed that Rainkit's mews were all ragged, as if her throat was sore. She allowed herself a small smile, finally she could help her clan, if it was only to get some medicine that she had seen earlier. She nodded to Shinningstream and meowed, "I'm going out again to get herbs, so don't worry about me." Then she was gone. She raced out of their camp and weaved through the two-leg Thunderpaths, going under most of them. She was getting used to this. Her paws were finally hardening so they weren't so sore from running on hard surface. She paused, hearing paws thumping on the ground behind her.

Gaze fierce, Flickerstep hurried triumphantly back to where her Clan now was. She was starving, but pride stopped her from eating the warm body grasped between her teeth. " Shiningstream!" The young she-cat called out, racing over, and dropping her catch. " A mouse! I found one!" Happiness battered away the hunger as she nosed it towards her Deputy, who needed it more. " I'm going to go hunting again." She added, flicking her tial in goodbye. Flickerstep started to walk away, before scenting Poisonpaw. " Where is she going?" The cat asked herself, following swiftly, but by now means silently.

Shiningstream leaned over and rubbed her head against Sharkfang tenderly, trying to look strong. "As best as I could... " she mewed softly, nodding a thank you to Poisonpaw and an extremely happy look to Flickerstep, and tried her best to eat as much as the mouse as she could get down. The mouse looked almost big enough to be a rat, so she tore off a piece of flesh and layed it down quietly next to Rainkit. Her daughter was 2 moons older than her biological kits, and could probably begin to wean soon. Shiningstream took the rest of her meal and passed it to Sharkfang. "Here, please eat some."

Sharkfang graciously licked Shiningstream's forehead once more before taking a bite from the mouse. Rainkit sniffed the meat with curiosity and took a lick of it. She finally decided, after much debating, that it was okay for her to eat. The kit gnawed on the tender mouse and licked her lips when she had finished. "Mum? What is that?" she said, motioning to the mouse with her tail. "It tastes like a gift from StarClan!" she squeaked with joy. Her eyes closed while she remembered the savoury taste of prey.

Shiningstream purred with amusement, licking her awe-struck daughter over the head. "It's called fresh-kill, Rainkit. Soon this is what you will eat from now on. And you know what that means?" The blue-gray tortoiseshell leaned forward, a mischievous gleam in her eyes to try and lighten the spirits. "You'll be made an apprentice soon!"

"Oh really! I can't wait until my ceremony! Will I be able to catch my own prey when I am apprenticed?" She feebly stood and streched her back before staring up into her mother's pale blue eyes. "What about Twilightkit, Skykit, Willowkit and Morningkit? Will they be apprenticed soon too?" Her eyes grew wide with excitement.

Shiningstream didn't answer right away. A small wave of uncertainty began to prick at her pads, and her ears twitched mechanically. Of course, Rainkit would never suspect that Shiningstream and Sharkfang weren't her real parents--Sharkfang was a light gray, Skykit a blue-gray, and her brother Twlightkit had gray patches around his stocky body. Despite that, Shiningstream wasn't sure Rainkit wanted to know the truth of her birth just yet. "Well, you were born two moons earlier than your brothers and sisters." that wasn't necessarily a lie. "You'll be an apprentice a little while longer, but you'll still get to train with them, don't worry." She licked her daughter over the ears. "Any mentor you would prefer?"

"You!" Rainkit giggled and snuggled against her mother's fur. "I wanna be just like you."
