In the shadows of the night, Willowstar sat on the ledge above her den which was covered in a thin, powdery blanket of snow. She peered out onto the Blowing Plains and let out a windy sigh that swirled in front of her for a moment before disspating into the darkness like a ghost. StarClan was watching helplessly above among the wispy clouds of the midnight gloom. Leaf-bare struck like and angry badger in the past few moons, would the change of season come soon, or would this bone-chilling weather hold steadfast for moons to come? The grey she-cat wrapped her tail delicately over her paws as she looked to the nearly full moon sitting among the icy stars.

Thornblossom had been lying awake for some time in her den, and had finally come out to get a breath of the cold air to clear her head. Usually she loved the herby fragrance of her den, but tonight, it seemed too overpowering. She was surprised to see Willowstar sitting alone, bathed in moonlight, above her den. She carefully picked her way up to the ledge where her leader sat, and delicately seated herself a few paw-steps away, glancing across the barren land upon which her leader gazed.

"I've never seen the camp so empty," Willowstar mourned, "I remember, many moons ago, a time when not even the sharpest of winds could confine us to our dens." The grey leader closed her eyes with a deep breath. Her ears were numb with the cold and her claws ached against the stone of the ledge. "Thornblossom, have you spoken with StarClan recently?" She turned to her the Medicine Cat. Willowstar's eyes spoke volumes against her will; they let through the worry and fear that danced inside of her, even though she felt obligated to remain strong for her clan.

(((You mean Thornblossom? ))) The newly-made Medicine-cat kneaded the unrelenting ground forlornly. "Not since I became a full Medicine-cat. But although they have not spoken to me, I do not feel they've deserted us. Maybe they just have nothing to say." She shivered in the cold night air, gazing out onto the desolate scenes, small eddies of icy snow crystals dancing in front of her in the wind.

Willowstar exhaled shakily, her breath floating in the frigid atmosphere that surrounded the camp. The she-cat hoped that it was only that, and nothing more. Perhaps StarClan believed that they could survive through this last moon of harsh temperatures and dreadful weather on their own. Once again, her body shook violently. Willowstar pulled her tail close around her paws and closed her eyes, hoping briefly that the season would soon pass.

"You should get back inside," Mewed Thornblossom. "We don't want you catching a chill out here. It's cold for the time of year... Besides, you'll need to be rested for dawn patrol." She flicked her tail anxiously, hoping to draw her leader away from the dismal scene.
